The Princess Diaries is turning 20!
The rom-com classic changed Anne Hathaway's career, and she revealed earlier this year that it seemed like a winner from the beginning.

It Was 'Electric'

... "Getting the script, it just had that feeling," Anne Hathaway told PEOPLE in January. She felt lucky even having the chance to audition.

Most people remember the legendary
Julie Andrews in the movie, but many forget that another music icon championed the project: Whitney Houston. And she was no silent partner – Whitney even showed up on set to sing director Garry Marshall "Happy Birthday"
during filming!

During the scene where Mia reads a
letter from her late father, a man appears
in a flashback, showing when the letter was written. Instead of casting someone
to play that small part, director Marshall
had Hathaway's IRL dad make a cameo.
The voice-over, however, is done by
actor René Auberjonois.

It turns out that the foot-popping kiss between Mia and Michael wasn't a smooth moment for Hathway's costar, Robert Schwartzman. "Anne's dad was on set that day," he says, "I was really nervous – kissing someone's daughter in front of them? That's weird!" Still, it ended up a glowing success.

After The Princess Diaries' success, Chris Pine joined the cast for a 2004 sequel, but there had been no word on a third film until early 2016, when director Marshall teased that he'd met with Hathaway and Andrews.

... After Marshall's death in 2016, Julie Andrews said she and Hathaway would still be interested in making a third film, as a tribute to the director who brought them together. Here's hoping it happens one day!
