Catherine and Peter are about to become parents and The Great season 2 explores how a child will complicate and enrich their lives.

Elle Fanning has never been pregnant, so she wanted to make sure Catherine’s pregnancy didn’t look too fake.

Having seen people in films holding their bellies a lot, Elle made it a point to not hold her own belly a lot during Catherine’s pregnancy.

Catherine is pregnant for many of season 2’s episodes, but we will see the birth. Elle was very nervous about the birth scene.

To prepare, Elle talked to a midwife and watched many YouTube videos.

The Great star reveals she also watched a video of her mother giving birth to her sister, Dakota Fanning. Her own birth happened during a tornado, so there’s no video.

Catherine’s feelings for the baby are impacted by the fact that once the child is born, her life will be at risk.

“I don’t think Catherine is that attached to the baby right now,” Elle explains. For her as a leader in a difficult and complicated situation, the birth of her child cannot be simple.

We would kind of refer to the baby as the ticking time bomb for Catherine, which is maybe not the best way to refer to your unborn child, but her maternal instincts I think grow as the season goes on.

For Peter, the baby and his feelings about it are clear because “it’s the culmination of all these that he’s wanted.”

Part of succeeding as a head of state and leader is producing an heir, and Nicholas Hoult found Peter’s joy for fatherhood was a joy for him as an actor too.

That's where the Peter and Catherine shift really begins because she doesn't feel that instant connection to being a mother and motherhood.

A future episode showcases their co-parenting when they misplace their child. “They both think the other has the baby and then suddenly it occurs to them that neither of them do,” Hoult teases.
