SNUB: Lady Gaga,
 House of Gucci

Praying to the father, son, and Gucci didn’t help Lady Gaga. Garnering her noms with critics' associations, the BAFTAs, and the SAG Awards wasn’t enough to convince the Academy to recognize the pop star’s performance.

SURPRISE:
Jesse Plemons,
 The Power of the Dog

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose! Plemmons embodied the Friday Night Lights motto with his surprise nom, beating out Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar) and Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza).

SNUB: Bradley Cooper,
 Licorice Pizza

Cooper credits director Paul Thomas Anderson with reigniting his love of acting, and we see why in his portrayal of producer Jon Peters. Unfortunately, passion wasn't enough to propel him to the Oscars.

SURPRISE:
 Drive My Car

The Best Picture nom shows surprising strength for a film on the bubble. The Japanese film first hinted at awards potential at Cannes, where it competed for the Palme d’Or and won Best Screenplay.

SNUB:
Ariana Grande & Kid Cudi,
 Don't Look Up

The parody track, “Just Look Up,” seemed like a sure bet for Ariana Grande to get her first Oscar nom. The Academy said thank you, next to the tune, despite nominating the film in other categories.
