Who is Broccoli on The Masked Singer? Here are the clues it's this legendary singer-songwriter
Broccoli, who is part of the recently revealed Group C on this season of The Masked Singer, is none other than brocc-'n-roll legend Paul Anka. Of course, we won't know for sure until our cruciferous friend is unmasked, but the clues all point in the direction of Anka, who, according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, "has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide (and 60 million copies of his compositions), had more than 150 million air plays, and written more than 900 songs." Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Connie Francis, Mitch Miller, Buddy Holly, Tom Jones, The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, The Sex Pistols, Nina Simone, Gypsy Kings, and Robbie Williams have all recorded his songs, and he's done duets with the likes of Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Dolly Parton and many more.
Let's break down the clues:
In Broccoli's first clue package, the number "60m" shows up on his faux TikTok video, which could be a reference to those 60 million copies of his compositions that have sold. (And, this may be a stretch, but the "75" in the clue package could refer to Anka's Instagram account, which has 75k followers and is where he regularly shares TikTok videos as a part of what he dubs "TikTok Tuesdays.")
In the package, he also says, "A contest greased the wheels for my career, and now I'm so humbled to work with the biggest artists." According to Anka's official website, his career was jumpstarted after he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest, and in the clue package, a random can of soup is shown.
We're also shown three musicians in what looks like a Mariachi band, and at one point Broccoli is also shown on a swing. These could be references to some of Anka's album titles, such as 3 Great Guys, Amigos, and Rock Swings.
Two dogs also pop up in the package. Of course, Gilmore Girls fans will recognize Anka as the inspiration for Lorelai Gilmore's dog's name, and Anka himself appears in a dream sequence on the show. Anka also had a role in the film Mad Dog Time.
Broccoli is also seen atop a car with a license plate that says "LD1ESMN" on it, and Anka has talked openly about being a ladies' man in the past. (He has also been married a number of times, has 5 daughters, and has written plenty of songs about ladies, so this clue could go a number of different ways.)
All of the references to him seemingly being young, then, are probably a misdirect, as Anka is 79 years old. Lest you think maybe he's too old to do the show, the crooner still performs regularly to this day. He credits healthy eating, exercise, and drinking habits with his longevity. Tellingly, when asked after his first performance if he is in fact a fan of broccoli, Broccoli responded, "I love broccoli. I eat it all the time because I believe in eating healthy."
And if all that didn't convince you, perhaps this will. Compare the mean, green singing machine's performance of "House Is Rockin'/Whole Lotta Shakin Going On" on The Masked Singer here:
