With a sixth season that much of the cast wishes didn’t exist and a series finale that infuriated viewers, the conclusion of The L Word did not bring much closure. But with a reboot on the horizon, let’s take a look back at where we left the major players of television’s first prominent series about queer women.

After being left at the altar by Shane at the end of season 3, DJ Carmen was never heard from again — but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t return in a reboot.

After working on a goodbye tribute video for Bette and Tina, she ended up dead in Bette and Tina’s swimming pool — a still-unsolved mystery that drove the plot for the entirety of season 6 and continues to anger fans. Potential murderers included nearly the entire cast, from former girlfriend Shane to Bette, whom she claimed to catch cheating on her spouse, Tina.

After giving Tasha (Rose Rollins) an ultimatum, telling her to decide between her and Jamie (Mei Melancon), she gets her happy ending with Tasha — but only after she discovers Jenny dead in Bette and Tina’s swimming pool and joins the rest of her friends at the police station. Proposed The L Word spin-off The Farm was set to star Leisha Hailey, so many viewers assumed Alice would take the fall for Jenny’s murder; when the spin-off didn't happen, we never found out who was responsible (or willing to take the blame) for Jenny’s murder.

At the series’ close, Bette was eager to move to New York with Tina to escape their often overwhelming inner circle in Los Angeles. Bette warned Jenny to back off in a scene that marked the last time viewers saw Jenny alive. The season ended with Bette and her friends being interrogated about the murder, her plans to move to New York and adopt a second child seemingly on hold.

Resident lothario of The L Word Shane ended the show in a relationship with an increasingly erratic Jenny (who had confessed to being in love with Shane). Still, Shane was unable to reform her ways and carried on an affair with Niki (Kate French). At the show’s conclusion, she discovered a letter from Molly (Clementine Ford) that Jenny concealed from her along with the missing negatives from Lez Girls that Tina was accused of stealing.

After realizing she would never be able to trust Dylan (Alexandra Hedison) and fearing that people only loved her for her money, she broke up with Dylan once and for all.

Formerly Moira, the show’s major transgender character faced a heartbreaking story line in season 6 after being impregnated and abandoned by Tom, Jodi Lerner’s sign interpreter. The show ended with Max still pregnant and the fate of his child TBD — would he keep the baby? Viewers never found out.

Bette’s half-sister, Kit briefly gets caught up in Jenny’s attempts to convince her that Bette cheated on Tina with Kelly. Kit got perhaps the happiest ending on the show, finding love with drag queen Sunset Boulevard/Sonny Benson (Roger Cross).

After fearing for her job over implications that she stole negatives of the film Lez Girls, Tina decided to move to New York with Bette after receiving an offer for her dream job there. The couple was left wanting a second child when their plans to adopt through a surrogate fell through.
