Murder and gold abound in exclusive first The Luminaries trailer
The Luminaries has hit the motherlode when it comes to intrigue, sex, and violence.
The new Starz series, based on Eleanor Catton's Man Booker Prize winning novel of the same name, dropped its first trailer, which EW is sharing exclusively above, and it pulses with desire, a potent mystery, and something altogether more dangerous.
EW can also announce that the series will premiere Sunday, Feb. 14 at 9:30 p.m. following the premiere of Men In Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham.
New photos (below) feature series stars Eva Green (Casino Royale), Hamish Patel (Yesterday), and Eve Hewson (Robin Hood). The novel was hailed for its tale of a 19th-century New Zealand mining community that blends ghost story with page-turning thriller. It follows the threads of an attempt to uncover a series of unexplained events, including the disappearance of the wealthy Emery Staines (Patel), a suicide attempt by prostitute Anna Wetherell (Hewson), and the mysterious trove of gold now being claimed by a dead man's widow, Lydia Wells (Green).
As the trailer showcases, nothing is what it seems in this gold rush tale of extreme fortune and fate.
"Set in a New Zealand gold-mining town in 1866, this epic yarn about a motley crew of 12 men and their attempts to solve a series of local mysteries reads like an actual Victorian novel," EW said of the novel. "Not a high-minded one destined to be taught in schools, but a genuinely pleasurable romp meant to absorb you for days and days."
