RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under hopping to Australia, New Zealand
RuPaul and Michelle Visage will preside over season 1 in Australia and New Zealand.
After years of speculation, World of Wonder has finally announced RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under season 1 will premiere later in 2021, with Emmy-winning producer-judges RuPaul and Michelle Visage joining the judging panel. A third judge (and celebrity guests) are set to be announced soon.
Across the debut season, RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under — which begins production this week — will pit queens from Australia and New Zealand against each other for the first Down Under Drag Superstar.
"I can't wait for everyone to see that Down Under queens have some of the biggest charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talents in the world. Thank you to Stan and TVNZ OnDemand for providing a platform for these outrageous drag artists to share their heart, soul and humor," RuPaul said in a press statement, while executive producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey added: "The dazzling queens of Australia and New Zealand have always been an inspiration to us, so we are thrilled to team up with our local production partners Stan and TVNZ to bring the creative genius of drag down under to international audiences on WOW Presents Plus."
The announcement comes on the heels of several other international spin-offs expanding World of Wonder's Drag Race global empire, including Canada's Drag Race (which was recently renewed for season 2), RuPaul's Drag Race UK (currently airing its second season), Drag Race Holland (which finished its first season last year), South America's The Switch Drag Race, Drag Race Thailand, and the upcoming Drag Race Spain.
The American version of Drag Race recently became the most-decorated competition series in history at the Emmys, earning 19 total awards across its 12-year run, including RuPaul's record-breaking five wins for hosting.
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under season 1 — a Stan Original production in collaboration with TVNZ OnDemand in New Zealand — will air in North America on the WOW Presents Plus subscription streaming app. Stay tuned for cast announcements later this year, and tune in to the ongoing RuPaul's Drag Race season 13 Fridays at 8:00 p.m. on VH1.
