'Outlander' season 3 trailer: An exhaustive analysis
Aye, that is a satisfying trailer! It’s been more than two months since Starz released the first teaser for season 3 of Outlander, and boy was it worth the wait! Unlike the last one, which showed lots of dreamy images of Jamie (Sam Heughan) fondling the hometown flora and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) running through the hospital like a scene out of Grey’s Anatomy, this one is heavy — with lots of agonizing moments involving our heroine in the future. And this time, there’s a clear loser: poor Frank, who starts out thinking “we’re going to be alright,” before realizing his 20th-century wife left her heart in 18th-century Scotland.
Let’s look closer at some of the more gripping images from the trailer, released just in time for the cast’s much-anticipated appearance at San Diego Comic-Con this Friday.
Look at the way Claire kisses Frank in this 20th century moment from the season 3 premiere! There is so much love and desire behind that buss. Does Frank even have a chance for a new life with his beloved? Sadly, book fans know the answer to that.
HEY now! It’s about time Tobias Menzies got his own beefcake moment! Eat your heart out, Heughan.
“Wish away.” Clearly, Frank didn’t mean that for his adopted daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton). He would rather wish away the memory of a certain hottie Highlander. And good luck with that, bud!
Look at Claire grasping her Pall Mall while trying to avoid the man who obviously brings her no pleasure. She looks about as happy as Julianne Moore did while playing a suicidal housewife in The Hours — and by that, I mean to say BRAVO, Balfe!
To be frank (no pun intended), I worried about how much (or how little) we would see of Bri and Roger (Richard Rankin) in the new season. This steamy embrace totally eases my pain and has me hoping we’ll see the beginning of a very passionate love affair in the new season.
Damn right, you’re home. Where you been, dawg? Oh, right — captivity.
Well, well — who’s this temptress? Obviously, it’s Geneva, the little tart who is betrothed to Lord Ellesmere and needs to practice her lovemaking skills on Jamie. Wonder how hard it was to fill that role?
We’ve been so caught up with imagining the print shop scene and how production will recycle those ships from Black Sails that we’ve barely chatted about Wil Johnson as Joe Abernathy, a fellow hospital intern who befriends Claire in 20th Century Boston. We’re looking forward to watching Claire become a surgeon while forming a platonic, but no less satisfying, connection with her pal Joe.
What did we miss? Which scene stood out for you?
Don’t forget! Outlander will cover EW in September! Besides offering an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the production that took place in South Africa earlier this year, we’ll release a new set of portraits that are sure to make your pulse race.
And for those Sassenachs traveling to San Diego for Comic-Con this week, make sure to attend the magazine’s annual Brave New Warriors panel July 21 in Ballroom 20. Rankin will be on the dais!
Outlander season 3 will debut Sunday, Sept. 10, on Starz.
