How 'EW' got that epic 'Supernatural' cover: Go behind the scenes with the Winchester (extended) family

Photographer Eric Ogden traveled to Vancouver to shoot Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins on the Supernatural stages on January 10, 2019.

Although the show has many Impalas, the one used in this shoot is Baby #1, AKA the pretty one.

For Padalecki's solos, we went to the Men of Letters bunker to utilize a corner of the space that included a typewriter. In the type writer was the first page of the 300th episode script, which Padalecki is also reading.

Although Padalecki, Smith, and Ackles were shot in Vancouver, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was shot separately — at his farm in upstate New York — and later added to the photos.

Most of Morgan's stuff was shot on a seamless background in the actor's garage so that he could be added into the group photos.

After the family portrait was shot, EW let the stars have a bit of fun with some nearby props.

Padalecki was the last to arrive at the shoot as he came directly from filming the show.

The concept of the shoot was to give fans a glimpse behind the scenes of the show, which is why you'll notice things like lights and other equipment in the background of the shot.

Each of the solo shots were taken in a different location, and Baby obviously felt like the perfect fit for Dean. (Yes, there was a smoke machine on set.)

Both the wooden slats and the hedges were items found around the stages that were then propped up and turned into backgrounds.

This shot was entirely unprompted as Collins, Ackles, and Padalecki decided to have a little fun.

Conveniently, Morgan had a similar wood wall at his farm, so we were able to recreate the shot. (Morgan's wife, Hilarie Burton, was also kind enough to make the crew breakfast.)

Padalecki jokingly pulled his jeans up to his knees to show some skin, at which point he realized his jeans were stuck and he couldn't get them back down. Then this happened.

Smith's solos were the very last shot of the day, taken after the family portrait.

While the shoot was happening, the Supernatural crew was hard at work shooting the show on the next stage.

Collins was shot in the set's actual prop room, which is why you'll notice a number of familiar items in the background. (Collins was also nice enough to eat some not great pizza.)
