Jon Bernthal can't outrun his shirtless past in American Gigolo first-look photos and teaser
Julian Kaye is trying to reconcile the man he was with the man he is today, and it's easier said than done.
EW has an exclusive first look at Showtime's upcoming American Gigolo series, which stars Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, We Own This City) as Julian, a former escort trying to restart his life after he's released from prison, where he spent 15 years following a wrongful conviction.
As he navigates complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him, Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) isn't done trying to figure out what happened all those years ago when Julian was sent to prison for murder. And — spoiler alert — it's all a lot more complicated than she ever could have imagined.
The series is a present-day reimagining of the 1980 film from Paul Schrader that, of course, starred Richard Gere. "It's hard to believe it's been more than 40 years since the film release of American Gigolo and now we have the chance to continue the story of American Gigolo as a TV series," executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells EW via email. "Expect heightened mystery, danger, and desires as Jon Bernthal takes the movie's iconic character on a contemporary, exhilarating journey."
The drama also stars Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel LaBelle as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady as Julian's best friend and mentor, Lorenzo.
