Zoë Kravitz explains her plan to combat heartbreak in Hulu's High Fidelity trailer
First, High Fidelity was a 1995 novel by Nick Hornby. Then, it became a 2000 movie starring John Cusack and Jack Black. Now, it’s a Hulu series starring Zoë Kravitz. But the basic concept is the same: Protagonist “Rob” (yes, even the name is the same) deals with heartbreak by diving even deeper into their record shop and obsession with making “top five” lists. In the new trailer for Hulu’s High Fidelity, released during Hulu’s Television Critics Association presentations Friday, Kravitz’s Rob outlines her solution to heartbreak: Making another top five list.
“What’s wrong with me? Why am I doomed to be left, why am I doomed to be rejected? Seriously,” Rob says. “So I’m gonna ask them: My top-five, all-time, desert island heartbreaks.”
Kravitz’s Rob shares a lot with the previous incarnations, but is also a new spin on the character. For one thing, she clearly has had both male and female sexual partners.
“We are absolutely huge fans of both the book and the movie. The main things we wanted to keep were the core conflict of the central character who at once is the hopeful romantic, and the same time a total cynic,” executive producer Veronica West explained at Hulu’s TCA presentation. “That seems really universal even though they’re classically male characteristics. So the core characteristics, the DNA of the source material with the top five lists and the obsession of music and stuff like that, those are the things that really define the link to the other properties. But the story of the show is new and different. We don’t want it to be predictable. We don’t want people to watch the show and know exactly what’s going to happen. It’s not the love story between just two people.”
Kravitz added, “the hope is that if we do more seasons we have more to draw from. We don’t want to, excuse my French, blow our load.”
