Here’s a change of pace: a Batman-adjacent show that won’t portray the death of the Waynes.
The latest 23-second teaser for Pennyworth, EPIX’s DC comics series chronicling the adventures of Bruce Wayne’s future butler, sees a young Alfred Pennyworth (The Imitation Game‘s Jack Bannon) meeting Thomas Wayne (Fleabag‘s Ben Aldridge) at a time when the future tycoon of Wayne Enterprises was just a young billionaire going through his mustache phase.
“I have a job for you,” Thomas says in the clandestine meeting.
In Pennyworth, Alfred arrives on the screen as a former British SAS soldier in his 20s. He’s more James Bond than butler at this point in 1960s London, where he starts his own security company (i.e. personal bodyguard service) and goes to work for Thomas.
Also spotted in the new footage is award-winning recording artist Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, described as a “spirited, sadistic, and sharp-tongued villain” who will test the courage of Alfred and Thomas. Jason Flemyng is also revealed as his character Lord Harwood, Bet’s “cultured, urbane, brilliant, and supremely sure of himself” partner-in-crime with a “sadistic, cruel nature.”
Gotham series creator Bruno Heller executive produces Pennyworth with fellow Gotham EP Danny Cannon. The cast is rounded out by Ryan Fletcher (Outlander), Hainsley Lloyd Bennett (Eastenders), Emma Paetz (Gentleman Jack), Polly Walker (The Mentalist), and Emma Corrin (The Crown).
Pennyworth, a 10-episode hourlong drama, premieres on EPIX this July 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
