Superhero Insider: Women dominated onThe Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow

Each week, we break down the biggest moments from Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Arrow — both here and on SiriusXM’s EW Live every Friday during Superhero Insider.

This week, The Flash ran to the future with Nora, Arrow spotlighted its women, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow somehow had an episode that began in Regency-era England and ended with a Bollywood musical number. Here are the highlights:

All hail Tala Ashe, Legends of Tomorrow‘s MVP. This week’s episode saw Ashe’s Zari confront her feelings for Nate and her prejudices about romance. Usually, Zari is pretty cool, in the sense that she keeps most of her feelings bottled up; however, in “Seance and Sensibility,” she, with the help of magical Hindu god of love ashes, uncorks the cap on that bottle and surrenders (sorry, not sorry) to senseless passion in an extravagant Bollywood musical number. Watching Ashe take Zari to this extreme was delightful. Like Sara (Caity Lotz) and Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), I briefly allowed myself to get sucked into this romantic fantasy because of Ashe’s enchanting performance. At the same time, the moment Zari resolves to remain open to love was appropriately sobering, too.

While watching this week’s Birds-of-Prey inspired outing of Arrow, did you forget that this wasn’t the first time Caity Lotz and Katie Cassidy Rodgers shared scenes with each other? Because, there was definitely a moment when I did. Both actresses convincingly made Sara and Earth-2 Laurel/Black Siren feel like strangers in the scene they shared by Quentin’s grave, which was great because these two characters barely know each other. In an episode that was filled with several great moments (that opening oner, the concluding team-up), the scenes between Lotz and Cassidy will stick with me the most because of how strong their performances were.

Helmed by first-time director Danielle Panabaker, “Godspeed” finally revealed Nora’s origin story. Panabaker made the episode feel like a throwback to season 1 and brought great performances out of the entire cast, especially Jessica Parker Kennedy, who effortlessly handled the episode’s lighthearted and heavier moments; a devastating Grant Gustin; and guest-star Kathryn Gallagher (YOU), who was hilarious and charming as Nora’s gone-too-soon best friend Lia. That being said, I do wish the script had done a bit more with Godspeed, the villain-of-the-week. Sure, Godspeed was visually striking, but he didn’t leave much of an impression beyond that because no attempt was made to flesh him out. Hopefully, the show finds a way to bring him back so that B.D. Wong can have more to do.
