Alex, I’ll take “Back-up Plans” for $200.
On Wednesday’s episode of ABC’s The Goldbergs, Erica (Hayley Orrantia), who went to college but dropped out to pursue her singing career, starts filling out applications … for game shows, much to the chagrin of parents Beverly (Wendi McLendon Covey) and Murray (Jeff Garlin), and EW has an exclusive preview above.
“Applications? Did someone say applications?! Please tell me you’re filling out applications?!” an enthusiastic Murray exclaims, appearing out of nowhere at the sound of that “a” word. But his attitude quickly sours (or, goes back to normal?) once he sees where she’s applying. “My baby’s applying to Tic Tac Dough! What the f— is this?”
“Don’t worry, Tic Tac Dough is just my safety show. My dream is to get accepted into Jeopardy!,” Erica informs her parents of the Alex Trebek-hosted trivia show, talking about those and other game shows — Win, Lose or Draw, Let’s Make a Deal, and Wheel of Fortune included — like they’re universities. “Mom reminded me of the smart, confident girl I used to be. Which is why I’m applying to all the top game shows in the country.”
“Trust me,” Beverly urges Murray, trying to calm him. “Erica will realize that college is the only answer when she can’t get onto any of these silly shows… It’s fine. Mama will fix this!”
Or, she won’t. Watch the clip above to see which game show calls Erica for an interview, and tune in to The Goldbergs Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC to see how it all, well, plays out.
