Schitt’s Creek fans, prepare to blast “A Little Bit Alexis” on repeat to hide your tears: Creators Dan and Eugene Levy have revealed that their CBC, Pop, and Netflix hit will be ending in 2020.

The Levys announced the news on social media in a letter addressed to “Our Dear Fans” on Thursday:

“We are very excited to announce that Schitt’s Creek is coming back for a sixth season on CBC and Pop in 2020! We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we’ve decided season six will be our last. We are so grateful to have been given the time and creative freedom to tell this story in its totality, concluding with a final chapter that we had envisioned from the very beginning. It’s not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow. We could never have dreamed that our fans would grow to love and care about these characters in the ways that you have.

“We are all so excited to begin shooting these last fourteen episodes and can’t thank you enough for the overwhelming love and generosity you’ve shown us. We hope you continue to enjoy the rest of our fifth season as we prepare to shoot our sixth!”

The announcement comes the morning after the airing of an episode that was particularly meaningful to Dan Levy, in which his character, David, supports his boyfriend, Patrick (Noah Reid), in coming out to his parents.

“I think on a personal note it’s the most difficult, and also the most rewarding episode I’ve ever written,” he told EW in an interview done before Thursday’s announcement. “And you don’t get opportunities like this very often in television to tell stories that are so closely tied to your own experience. It certainly took me a long time to write it, but I’m really proud of it. And I hope that we continue to spark conversation in people’s homes.”
