Turns out that David Schwimmer’s love for Ross’ pet monkey on Friends was all just for the cameras.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Man with a Plan star Matt LeBlanc shared some behind the scenes intel from beloved comedy — more specifically about the monkey who played Ross’ pet Marcel on the show. “I liked the monkey!” began LeBlanc. “I like animals, and the monkey was really cool. Schwimmer… Not so much. He’s the one that had to work with it the most, so he was like, ‘Again with the monkey?’ But I got along great with it.”

LeBlanc, who played Joey Tribbiani on the NBC sitcom, went on to share an incident concerning the monkey (who’s actually a girl named Katie in real life) that happened on set during the show’s ten-year run. “One day we’re shooting a scene with the monkey,” he said. “You know, sound stages are huge. The lights are hanging from the grid, and they go way up on these chains and the ceiling’s like, 60 feet or whatever it is. It just disappears into the blackness of the stage. So all the actors were like, ‘OK, I guess we’re on a five. I’ll see you later, I’ll be in my room.'”

The actor went onto explain the crew finally coaxed Katie down with mealworms about 30 minutes later. Sounds like monkeys won’t always be there for you after all.

Man with a Plan airs Mondays at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Watch the clip above.
