The small screen is getting a new version of Deathstroke.
EW has confirmed that NYPD Blue and Ozark vet Esai Morales has been cast as the fearsome assassin, also known as Slade Wilson, in season 2 of DC Universe’s Titans.
In the comics, Deathstroke is the Teen Titans’ arch-nemesis. In fact, he once almost tore the team apart in the definitive New Teen Titans arc “The Judas Contract,” by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. That being said, he looms pretty large over the DC Comics Universe as a whole because he’s such a formidable opponent, which explains why he’s been brought to both the big and small screens so many times. Most recently, Manu Bennett played the character on the CW’s Arrow, last appearing at the beginning of season 6. Will Arnett voiced him in last summer’s Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, and Joe Manganiello cameoed as Slade at the end of Justice League (whether or not he’ll ever actually reprise the role in the future remains to be seen).
Here’s Titans’ official description of the character: “Slade Wilson is known for being DC’s deadliest assassin. While serving his country, Slade became an elite soldier before government testing enhanced his physiology to near superhuman levels, putting him on a path of darkness and revenge. To his family, Slade is a father and husband, but to the rest of the world, he is feared by many as the infamous Deathstroke; selling his services to the highest bidder as the ruthless assassin that never gives up and never misses.”
Although we still don’t know when the young superhero drama will return, we do know that when it does, it’ll also feature Superboy, played by Australian newcomer Joshua Orpin.
The complete first season of Titans — which also stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, and Teagan Croft — is available to stream on DC Universe now.
