Idris Elba‘s Charlie is ready to drop a new beat. Unfortunately for the struggling DJ, it doesn’t have anything to do with music.
With the first Turn Up Charlie trailer, Netflix teases the Luther star’s new comedy that he co-created with executive producer Gary Reich. The actor’s titular character is a down-on-his-luck DJ hoping to make a comeback, even though his new job as a nanny to the 11-year-old child of his famous best friend isn’t the flashiest of professions.
He used to be a big deal. Now he’s left sitting in a deflated blow-up chair and dealing with a demon child named Gabby (Frankie Hervey), who’s hellbent on getting rid of her new guardian. Based on the footage, they end up being the best of buds as Charlie gets back in the music game with help from Gabby’s mom (Coyote Ugly‘s Piper Perabo).
Turn Up Charlie also stars JJ Feild, along with a guest-star roster that includes Angela Griffin, Guz Khan, Jocelyn Jee Esein, Jade Anouka, Cameron King, and Dustin Demri-Burns.
Tristram Shapeero, who directs the series with Matt Lipsey, will also executive produce with Elba and Reich.
Season 1 of Turn Up Charlie premieres March 15 on Netflix.
