Beth’s showcase episode keeps filling up with familiar faces.
In addition to Phylicia Rashad and Goran Visnjic, Carl Lumbly will guest-star in the Feb. 19 episode of This Is Us, which explores the backstory of Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), EW has confirmed.
The Alias veteran, whose recent credits include Supergirl and NCIS: Los Angeles, will play the now-late father of Randall’s wife. Lumbly, who stars in the upcoming film Doctor Sleep, has been cast opposite Rashad, who assumes the role of Beth’s mom, while Visnjic pops up as Beth’s teacher. The episode, titled “Our Little Island Girl,” centers on Beth and cousin Zoe (Melanie Liburd) returning home to D.C. to help care for her injured mother.
In related casting news, also first reported by Deadline, Rachel Naomi Hilson and Akira Akbar have been added to the show in recurring roles, playing teen Beth and young Beth, respectively.
“We’re going to get the full story, and it’s about where she goes from here,” Watson recently told EW of the episode. “Now that we know what’s been bothering her, what’s been in on her mind, and where she finally wants to go, now what is she going to do?”
This Is Us returns to NBC next Tuesday with Songbird Road: Part Two,” which features a meeting between Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack’s very-much-alive brother, Nicky (Griffin Dunne). To see a pair of first-look photos of Beth’s big episode, head over here.
