Netflix announced Friday that Sex Education has been renewed for a second season. Following a buzzy first season (the streaming service estimated over 40 million households watching the title within the first four weeks) the series will return for eight more episodes. Filming is set to being in the spring.
Created and written by Laurie Nunn and executive-produced by Jamie Campbell and Ben Taylor, Sex Education stars Gillian Anderson as sex therapist and mom to socially awkward, high school student Otis (Asa Butterfield). The show has received praise for its exploration of sexuality, relationships and identity — as well as being hilarious. “The reception to season one has been so exciting,” said Nunn in a statement. “Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible. I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”
Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content, Netflix. added: “Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor inSex Education. Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”
