Sarah Michelle Gellar will star in Olay’s first Super Bowl ad in nostalgic fashion.
Titled “Killer Skin,” the Big Game commercial will hark back to some of Gellar’s beloved slasher movies, such as Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer, to give viewers a throwback- and scare-filled vignette that the skin-care company hopes will stand out to women and men alike.
“You want to have something that makes people excited, maybe flashes them back to something that they remember, makes them jump out of their seat,” Gellar tells EW of the TV spot.
According to Olay, nearly half of NFL fans are women, but only about a quarter of Super Bowl ads actually star women. “In entertainment, you always want to be part of something that, instead of being a part of the trend, is bucking the trend,” Gellar says.
While Gellar is the face of “Killer Skin,” she’s not the only fearless woman teaming up with Olay for the Super Bowl. As part of the company’s broader “Face Anything” campaign, Olay has recruited the Fearless Nine, a group of inspiring women including gymnast Aly Raisman, sportscaster Kay Adams, and plus-size model Denise Bidot. Gellar and the Fearless Nine, all of whom will be in attendance in Atlanta for the game, hope the commercial and campaign will start a conversation about breaking barriers and challenging norms in their respective fields.
Gellar says she’s particularly proud to be working with women like Raisman, the Olympic gold medalist who delivered a powerful victim impact statement during the sexual abuse sentencing hearing of former Team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar last year.
“I get to be a part of a bigger conversation,” Gellar says. “[Raisman] is standing up for something that has directly, emotionally, and in such a negative way affected her, and the fact that she’s turning it into a positive for so many others…I mean, she’s the real hero.”
