Supernatural: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles on the boys' reaction to Dad
Sam and Dean Winchester have complicated relationships with their father. For years, Dean was John’s soldier, no questions asked. Sam, on the other hand, refused to be, and that caused tension within the family unit. Needless to say, growing up on the road was far from simple. And yet, with John’s return in the upcoming 300th episode of Supernatural, a lot has changed. For starters, Sam and Dean are now firmly cemented in the hunting lifestyle. But will their experiences change the conversations they have with their father? “This is one of those episodes where we start to see behind the curtain,” Jared Padalecki says of the 300th. “We see what’s really driving Sam.”
As Jeffrey Dean Morgan told EW, it’s a chance for closure between father and son. As Padalecki puts it, “This episode gives Sam a chance to say sorry and to also forgive.”
But for Dean — who plays a big part in Dad’s return — the episode is a glimpse into a wonderful life that he can’t have. “This is something that Dean’s always wished for,” Jensen Ackles says. “For Dean, the whole episode is a dream that he doesn’t want to wake up from. But he knows he has to. So it’s that inner struggle of wanting what’s in front of you and wanting what you have at this moment to last but knowing that it won’t, and that’s been a story that has been repeated on this show quite often. It’s heartbreaking.”
