Meanwhile, back in the present day, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) have a lot (too much?) on their shared plate, including helping troubled foster child Deja (Lyric Ross), who was last seen mangling Randall’s Mercedes, and overseeing the rehabilitation of William’s building. Here, they seem to be waiting — Beth perhaps a bit more patiently than Randall — for an appointment at an office that specializes in children. Which means that this could be a matter concerning Deja, daughter Tess (Eris Baker), or other daughter Annie (Faithe Herman). Or maybe there’s fourth child that they have decided to adopt? Just kidding. Probably.
“Something is going to transpire with Tess, and how does Deja fit in to the family?” Brown hints to EW. “After the end of last season, she’s not what one would call a happy camper. How do Randall and Beth deal with trying to make her feel as welcomed as possible — and growing and expanding their family?”
