Masters of Sex and Boardwalk Empire veteran Bash Doran to tackle sci-fi epic

J.J. Abrams’ mysterious HBO sci-fi drama series has found its showrunner, EW has learned.

The Star Wars director has tapped Bash Doran (photo below) as lead writer and an executive producer for the project, which has a series order from the network. Doran was a writer-producer on The Looming Tower for Hulu, Masters of Sex for Showtime, Boardwalk Empire for HBO, and Smash for NBC, as well as the upcoming UK Channel 4 series Jerusalem.

The show is titled Demimonde and if you follow news about Abrams projects it won’t surprise you that not much is known about the story. Its logline is one of the most generic (not to mention contradictory) that you’ll ever read — “an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama.” Previously, Deadline has described it slightly less vaguely as “centered around a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force.” Warner Bros. is the studio.

Along with executive producing this Demimonde, Abrams, per usual, has plenty on his plate. He’s an executive producer on HBO’s Westworld, which just finished its second season, as well as Hulu’s upcoming Stephen King anthology series Castle Rock (we hear it’s quite good). He’s also producing the upcoming Mission: Impossible — Fallout, an untitled Star Trek project, the Half-Life movie adaptation and … hm, are we forgetting anything? Oh yes, directing Star Wars: Episode IX.
