The Flash promotes Hartley Sawyer to series regular for season 5
Elongated Man isn’t going anywhere.
EW has learned that Hartley Sawyer, who recurred on The Flash in season 4, has been promoted to series regular for season 5.
Sawyer joined the CW drama in season 4 as Ralph Dibney, a disgraced, morally flexible detective-turned-PI who crosses paths with Team Flash after gaining the ability to stretch his body into any shape or form. Unlike most metahumans, however, he became Barry Allen’s latest protégé instead of turning to a life of crime, and the season followed Ralph as he learned how to be a hero. Toward the end of the season, Ralph appeared to die when the Thinker took over his body; however, it turned out he was still alive, and he regained control of his body after the Flash defeated Clifford DeVoe.
Along with Sawyer, actress Danielle Nicolet, who recurred as D.A. Cecile Horton, will also be a series regular in the new season.
The Arrowverse as a whole has experienced quite a few cast changes in the past few months. Last week, Keiynan Lonsdale announced he won’t be returning to The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow as a series regular, though he will appear in the former’s season 5 premiere. Meanwhile, original Arrow cast member Paul Blackthorne departed the show at the end of season 6 after his character, Quentin Lance, was killed. Thankfully, it isn’t all bad news. Both Matt Ryan, who plays Constantine, and Jes Macallan, who plays Ava Sharpe, were promoted to series regulars for Legends of Tomorrow’s fourth season.
The Flash will return for season 5 this fall on the CW. In the meantime, you can read our recap of the season 4 finale here.
After the success of Arrow, Barry Allen (a.k.a. the Flash) gets his own CW treatment in this comic-themed spin-off.
