After taking on the law firm he helped create in season 1 of Amazon’s Goliath, Billy Bob Thornton’s Billy McBride is back to take on another behemoth organization in season 2: a Mexican drug cartel.
Complicating matters is the involvement of a Los Angeles mayoral candidate (Ana de la Reguera) and a wealthy (and weird) real estate developer (Mark Duplass).
The actors and producer Lawrence Trilling join EW ahead of the June 15 premiere for a Facebook Live chat at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT today to preview the intense and dangerous events, which finds McBride — now a whole lot richer after the events of season 1, but still battling (or, comfortably living with?) his demons — defending a teen accused of double homicide.
“It’s a little bit like Rocky in a courtroom. You’ve got this guy who’s barely a contender, and he keeps getting knocked down by an overwhelming favorite but keeps getting up,” co-creator David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) told EW before the series premiered in 2016. “So that’s the journey that we take our broken-down, damaged character on, which is also the second part of the story — how damaged and dysfunctional lawyers have become in this day age. The depression rate is off the charts. The drinking problem is exponentially more severe than it was, say, 20 years ago.”
Goliath, created by Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro (Boston Legal), was Amazon’s first-ever straight-to-series order, which meant it skipped the streaming service’s pilot-voting process for its library of original series, and nabbed a Golden Globe win for Thornton in 2017.
Watch EW’s Facebook Live interview with the Goliath cast on Monday, June 11, at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT.
