Kindred spirits, get ready for summer at Green Gables.

Netflix unveiled the trailer and announced the release date for the second season of Anne with an E on Friday. The adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s 1908 classic Anne of Green Gables will continue on July 6, when the entire 10-episode second season will hit the streaming service.

“I believe there’s always a bit of good in any situation, even a bad one,” the ever-optimistic Anne (Amybeth McNulty) says in the trailer. “I think it builds character.” That’s a good outlook to have in this version of Avonlea, which is notably darker than previous small-screen versions of the classic have been. “All the darker aspects of the story are inherently in the book, so I’m not actually reinventing the wheel; I’m just taking us there,” series creator Moira Walley-Beckett told EW ahead of the first season. “I wanted to dramatize it, and I wanted it to feel visceral.”

When season 1 left off, the Cuthberts were in financial distress, selling valuables and taking on boarders in order to keep the loan that Matthew took out to invest in promising crops. Anne had to part with her beautiful puffed-sleeved dress, and the two men who applied to board at Green Gables turned out to be the same thugs who beat up and robbed Jerry, unbeknownst to the Cuthberts.

It’s a grim place to pick up, but the season 2 trailer is hopeful (isn’t Anne always?). “I love looking out at the horizon and imagining all the possibilities,” she says, and the next 10 episodes promise to bring many new possibilities as well as new faces: Netflix has announced the additions of Dalmar Abuzeid as Sebastian and Cory Grüter-Andrew as Cole. It also appears that we’ll be getting more of a look at Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann), who’s been working on the docks following the death of his father in season 1.

Watch the trailer above, and check out the new episodes next month. For the uninitiated, you can catch up on the first season of Anne with an E on Netflix now. As Anne says, “You never know what’s going to happen until you begin!”

The second season of Anne with an E hits Netflix July 6.
