Cloak and Dagger are fighting. Not physically — they’ll save those moves for when the world needs their help. But on a Thursday afternoon in May, the stars of the upcoming series Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt, aren’t seeing eye to eye. “I’m going team zeppole over beignets any day,” Joseph says, at which point Holt screams, “I love beignets!” Let’s just hope pastry preference isn’t the thing that comes between the superheroes. (Spoiler: It’s not.)

Holt and Joseph star on Freeform’s upcoming New Orleans-set series, which follows Tandy Bowen (Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Joseph), two teenagers who discover that a childhood event left them both with powers they can’t explain. Tandy can sense people’s hopes and throw light daggers from her hands, while Tyrone can sense people’s fears and teleport. Together they can save their city. Well, once they figure out how to be teenagers.

“Even though they’ve been forced to grow up because of everything they’ve been through, they’re still kids and they’re still finding themselves,” Joseph says. Holt adds, “The things that both Tandy and Tyrone are going through are what kids in 2018 are going through. We’re hitting some really heavy topics — we’re focusing on police brutality, sexual abuse, addiction, along with all the other things Tandy and Tyrone are going through in their home life.”

Thankfully, the two teens will have each other to lean on. “It’s incredible how they both are dealing with two very separate things in their lives, but that they’re always somehow being brought together,” Holt says. “They’re the answers to each other’s questions.”

Now, if only they could agree on dessert.

Cloak & Dagger premieres Thursday, June 7, at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
