Fox has renewed the Emily VanCamp and Matt Czuchry medical drama The Resident for a second season, EW has learned.
The freshman drama, which focuses on the last years of a young doctor’s training, has been averaging more than 10 million total viewers per episode across all platforms, improving on its year-ago time period by 31 percent in the adults 18-49 demographic.
Bruce Greenwood and Merrin Dungey also star in the project, from executive producers Amy Holden Jones and Todd Harthan.
“Amy, Todd and all the producers on The Resident set out to create a medical show that viewers haven’t seen before — to peel back the curtain and reveal the truth of what happens, both good and bad, behind the scenes at hospitals across the country. Clearly, they’ve succeeded,” says Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn. “Matt, Emily, Bruce, Manish [Dayal], Shaunettye [Renée Wilson] and the show’s entire cast have turned in consistently heartfelt performances, and we are so excited to go back to Chasten Memorial for another tremendous season.”
The Resident joins Fox’s previously announced renewals, including 9-1-1, Empire, The Simpsons, Orville, Family Guy and The Gifted. More renewal (and cancellation) news is expect over the next week ahead of the network’s upfront presentation.
