Superstore creator promises 'very big' season finale: 'I think it will surprise a lot of people'
Season 1 finale: Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom) goes into labor and (almost) the entire Cloud 9 crew walks out after manager Glenn (Mark McKinney) gets fired for trying to work around the company's lack of maternity leave. (He gets his job back in the season 2 premiere.)
Season 2 finale: A tornado destroys the store, but not before Amy (America Ferrera) and Jonah (Ben Feldman) share a kiss as they take shelter from the impending storm.
Season 3 finale: NBC's Superstore goes global!
"We'll, for the first time, get a sense of the real international scope of Cloud 9," reveals creator Justin Spitzer, "like Walmart or Target." Airing Thursday night, the episode titled "Town Hall" finds the St. Louis branch hosting a quarterly international company meeting, attended by the CEO and employees from stores around the world.
While that will mean more hilarious — and surely awkward — interactions with new visiting characters, a
old former employee also makes her return. "We let Myrtle go in a previous episode so that now comes back in a big way," Spitzer says of Linda Porter's character, who was fired as a money-saving cut by the new district manager in the March 29 episode but made a brief appearance two episodes later in "Lottery" (will she have won millions?!).

But after 55 episodes of building and easing and building again tensions that have been "ramping up between Jonah and Amy" — there was that twister kiss and (***SPOILER ALERT***) the second one they shared a couple weeks ago right before Amy revealed she's pregnant (not by "beverage guy" Alex who she's dating, but her soon-to-be-ex-husband Adam), and then, when they talked about it, the conversation ended with Amy telling Jonah to go to hell, followed by Jonah (gasp!) breaking up with girlfriend Kelly (Kelly Stables) — don't expect a quick resolution.
"We've been pacing ourselves but with the knowledge that things need to continue to build," Spitzer explains. "A lot comes to fruition in this finale…about their tension, their will-they-won't-they."
Which means, expect a finale "somewhere in the middle" — one with cliffhangers but that also puts a ribbon on some things, thanks in part to knowing back in February while still writing and shooting the tail end of season 3 that they'd be returning for a fourth.
"I would say our season 3 finale is a very big episode that I think will surprise a lot of people," Spitzer teases.
See what surprises are, well, in store when the Superstore season finale airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
