American Pie is one of the most popular projects of Natasha Lyonne’s career, but she admits to being “confused” by it.
During the latest episode of PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, the Orange Is the New Black star looked back on the 1999 film in which she starred alongside Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, and Seann William Scott.
“I was very confused by this movie,” shared Lyonne. “It’s an interesting sort of discussion on diversity… And I think that frankly, that was something that was already starting to bump for me then, just this idea of these like straight, white, middle-class kids having this kind of suburban, fratty experience… speaking as a city kid and a bit of a troublemaker, I did not identify with the experience.”
Then, after turning down the role multiple times, why did she finally say yes to the film and two subsequent sequels? “I think it was money,” declared Lyonne. “Just for the sake of honesty, I’m also very grateful to it because it allowed me to have a huge independent movie career for decades.
