Letitia Wright raps about Red Lobster and vibranium for Jimmy Fallon
The 'best freestyler in Wakanda' showed off her skills on 'The Tonight Show'
There’s the Wheel of Impressions, the Wheel of Musical Impressions, the Wheel of Decisions, and the Wheel of Freestyle. For Letitia Wright, the breakout star of Black Panther who knows how to drop a beat, Jimmy Fallon brought out the latter.
The Tonight Show host refereed a freestyle trade-off between Wright and The Roots’ Tariq Trotter (a.k.a. Black Thought). Pressing the random topic generator, the actor’s first challenge was to piece a rap together that mentioned “disco,” “Red Lobster,” and the “vibranium” metal from Black Panther.
What followed were gems like, “Yo, yo, let’s grab some food at Red Lobster/ Roots, tell me how I can win an Oscar.”
Tariq somehow managed to work in “Snuffleupagus,” and Wright closed out her set with rhymes about “hammer,” “burrito,” and “Benedict Cumberbatch.”
“In and out of portals like Doctor Strange, a.k.a. Benedict Cumberbatch comin’ through the hatch,” she laughed.
Wright and her Black Panther costars Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o told EW about their rap battles on the film’s set during the Warrior Falls scenes. “There were many people on set, huge set, and I was just messing about,” Wright recalled. “I was trying to spit game to even Lupita or Danai because we’re all close together.”
Since then, they reprised their rap battles amid the film’s debut in theaters. “Oh boy, I feel some bars coming!” Nyong’o said in a video posted to social media, calling Wright “the best freestyler in Wakanda.”
Now let’s get Wright in a Drop the Mic session against James Corden.
