Can they afford big sketches and musical numbers so late in the season?

Later this week, comedian John Mulaney will be hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time, with Jack White as the musical guest. Mulaney certainly has experience with the show, having been a writer for a number of years (notably co-creating Bill Hader’s Stefon character) and pops up for an on-screen cameo from time to time, as he did in Hader’s recent hosting turn. In a new teaser for the episode, Mulaney lays out his big plans for his turn in the spotlight — at least until a producer shows up to ruin the fun.

“I’m so excited for Saturday,” Mulaney tells the viewer. “We’re gonna have big sketches and musical numbers and special celebrity guests.”

“It’s late in the season,” a producer replies. “Massive budget cuts.”

Mulaney laughs off the fiscal question, declaring that he’ll pay the costs himself. But alas, all he has is prop money.

Watch the teaser above. Mulaney hosts a new SNL on April 14 at 11:30 pm ET/PT.
