English classes in the zombie apocalypse must be top-notch because Carl wrote one hell of a letter to his dad before his death on The Walking Dead.

In the opener from Sunday’s penultimate episode of season 8, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) finally reads the message his son left when he died in the midseason premiere. Tears drip down Rick’s cheeks as he takes in the letter — shared in voiceover by Chandler Riggs himself — which looks back on the joys of his childhood and urges his father to find “peace with Negan” and start over.

According to Talking Dead, Lincoln wore an earbud while filming the scene so he too could hear Riggs’ voice as he performed the scene, during which he also noticed Michonne and Judith walking hand-in-hand, Jerry cradling baby Gracie, and pregnant Maggie loading up a car.

Read the full text of his letter below:

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
