Westworld casts Rinko Kikuchi in season 2
Westworld (TV series)
Westworld is so secretive that we’re still finding out about new season 2 cast members — despite the show having wrapped months ago and it’s premiering in just a few weeks!
The HBO drama’s new trailer (watch it here) has revealed that Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Norwegian Wood, Bable, Pacific Rim) is part of the new season. We’re told her character’s name is Akane. She plays what appears to be a geisha character in the show’s mysterious ShogunWorld.
ShogunWorld is a feudal Japan park owned by Delos Incorporated whose existence was first teased at the end of the show’s debut season. Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have played it coy about whether we’ll see this other android-populated land during season 2, but the new trailer includes several shots confirming that, yes, it’s happening.
In a previous trailer, Westworld revealed that actor Peter Mullan had signed on to play Delos founder James Delos.
Fun fact: With her nomination for 2006’s Bable, Kikuchi became the first Japanese actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in 50 years.
Westworld — latest trailer here — returns April 22 to HBO.
Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's ambitious sci-fi thriller is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name.
