Watch out, Hallmark: Lifetime is aiming to make Christmas season more competitive.
Lifetime announced on Thursday that it is more than doubling its number of original holiday movies in 2018. The network is ordering 14 new Yuletide flicks that will hit the air in November and December as part of its It’s A Wonderful Lifetime programming block. Last year, Lifetime premiered six movies, including A Very Merry Toy Story, which re-teamed Holiday in Handcuffs stars Mario Lopez and Melissa Joan Hart.
The centerpiece of this year’s bounty is a movie with Toni Braxton, which stems from the multi-picture production deal she has just signed with Lifetime. Braxton has previous ties with the network, serving as executive producer of the 2016 biopic Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart.
The holiday-movie marketplace has become increasingly crowded, with about 60 new original films debuting last fall and winter. Hallmark has been the unqualified leader, airing 33 movies on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries in 2017 alone. Smaller cable networks like Ion and UP have also stepped up their Yuletide game, and last year, Netflix entered the field with a pair of buzzy movies.
