We all know Oprah Winfrey wouldn’t be Oprah without taking the high road, and, of course, she proved that once again by opting not to respond to President Donald Trump’s tweet about her earlier this week — a choice she explained during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night.
Following Winfrey’s report about America’s political divide during Trump’s presidency on last Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes, Trump tweeted, “Just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point I knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 Minutes. The questions were biased and slanted, the facts incorrect. Hope Oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”
Much like she did on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, when Jimmy Kimmel brought up Trump’s tweet about her, Winfrey essentially recreated the shrug emoji. But then the host got more specific, asking if she’d ever felt insecure in the last 35 years.
“I’ve tried to think about, ‘Have I ever?'” she replied. We’ll take that as a no.
She went on to describe learning about the tweet — her A Wrinkle in Time director Ava Duvernay texted her in the wee hours and she woke up to it — when Kimmel stopped her to ask if she even considered tweeting a response.
“Not a second,” she said. “You don’t win by meeting any kind of negativity head-on. You just have to say, ‘Well, I don’t know what that was, but alright. I wasn’t in the room when he did that so I don’t know.'”
And that, friends, is why Oprah is Oprah.
