The powers that be at McDonald’s severely underestimated the blood lust Rick and Morty fans had for “The Sauce,” a.k.a. the tangy Szechuan sauce from the 1990s. They don’t intend to make that mistake again.
Starting Monday, Feb. 26, the golden arches will again serve Szechuan sauce across all U.S. locations — and this time there will be a supply of 20 million packets.
“We did not anticipate the overnight crowds, the cross-state travel and the amazing curiosity, passion and energy fans showed,” read a statement from McDonald’s. “Our super-limited batch, though well-intentioned, clearly wasn’t near enough to meet that demand. We disappointed fans and we are sorry.”
Rick and Morty sparked the resurgent interest in Szechuan sauce after airing a reference to it in an April 2017 episode. (“I’m not driven by avenging my dead family, Morty! That was fate. I’m driven by finding that McNugget sauce!”) Since then, McDonald’s gave The Sauce a limited release, which sparked a bidding war, riots, and petitions.
But that was back when each location had a reported 20-40 packets on hand. Lesson learned.
McDonald’s will continue to ride the Szechuan craze with a podcast from Studio@Gizmodo and Onion Labs called The Sauce, which tracks the saga of Rick’s coveted “Mulan-McNugget sauce” in three parts. (Click here to listen on various platforms.)
