Jimmy Kimmel explains his reaction to Fergie's 'unusually sultry' national anthem
Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Fergie’s “unusually sultry” National Anthem performance after he “wound up in the middle of it.”
The late-night host had attended the NBA All-Star game and he was caught grinning on camera towards the end of her rendition. “I just wanna say the reason I was smiling… is because I love the national anthem so much,” Kimmel told a laughing audience on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
“Like Amy Winehouse impersonating Jessica Simpson” and “my friend’s drunk mom acting sexy” were just some of the more negative responses to the performance on social media. “In hindsight, trying to work in the words ‘my humps, my humps, my lovely lady lumps’ may have been a mistake,” Kimmel added to the jokes.
Fergie ended up apologizing, which Kimmel said she didn’t have to do. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone,” she said in a statement. “I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
“Here’s the thing about taking risks,” Kimmel said, “when it comes to the national anthem, don’t. Just don’t. Don’t take risks when you’re doing brain surgery, don’t take risks when you’re driving a school bus, or singing the National Anthem. Just regular is fine.”
