Every wonder what the woman who brought Cookie Lyons (Taraji P. Henson) into this world was like? Now’s your chance to find out.

Fox announced Friday that Alfre Woodard has been cast to play Cookie’s mom Renee in a recurring guest role when Empire returns with new episodes next month. Woodard is the Oscar-nominated and Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress perhaps best known as Lafayette’s crazy mom on HBO’s True Blood. She most recently appeared in 12 Years a Slave and horror flick Annabelle.

Just when you thought the Lyons clan couldn’t get any wilder, they do; as the logline points out Renee’s return to her daughter’s life is “turbulent.” When we last left the music-making moguls, Lucious (Terrence Howard) had been drugged and kidnapped by Claudia (Demi Moore). Maybe having a mom around isn’t such a bad idea?

Empire returns Wednesday, March 28 at 8p.m. ET on Fox.

Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created this Fox drama about a kingpin of hip-hop (played by Terrence Howard) and his family, who fight him for control of the empire.
