Jason Jones, creator and star of The Detour, stopped by PeopleTV to give a tour of his favorite scenes from TBS comedy.

The tour includes a gruesome home birth Jones describes as “one of the grossest scenes I have ever filmed in my life.” He said the idea for the scene originated when his wife and co-creator Samantha Bee wanted to give birth in their home. “[She] wanted to labor in a tub back in the day when we had children. After watching videos of it, she quickly decided not to,” he says.

Other scenes include a family trip to a racially insensitive restaurant and an attempt at boating to Cuba gone awry, which actually wasn’t scripted. “I was supposed to drive straight out of the slip. What actually happened was the opposite: I drove it up onto a dock… and ripped the hull open, and we just decided to keep it.” Luckily no one was hurt, and Jones says, “I’ve never seen the crew laugh harder at anything.”

Of season 3, he notes, “Our kids are getting older, and we have to deal with certain things. You know, this family deals with them very honestly and openly.… [This] season, we needed to either raise the bar or lower the bar, depending on how you look at it.”

The Detour airs Tuesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS. Watch the full clip above.
