What do you do after hitting 541 home runs, winning three World Series, breaking a nearly 100-year-old curse, and helping rally an entire city in the wake of tragedy? Well, you look for a new job, naturally.
That’s the premise of David Ortiz’s new Fusion series Big Papi Needs a Job. “Once you’re not on the baseball schedule, you’re going to have a lot of time to do whatever you want,” he tells EW.
So now, a year after his retirement, the Boston Red Sox legend takes a swing at a variety of different careers, trying everything from being a musician to a manicurist. “It’s crazy when you’re giving a woman a pedicure and you don’t know what you’re doing,” shares Ortiz, “and she’s looking at you like, ‘Really, this is what you’re doing?'”
Unsurprisingly, his favorite job was going “to the place where they make beer,” while the toughest proved to be a very different cleanup than he’s used to. “I’ve got to say cleaning dogs,” he reveals. “I guess you’ve got to get familiar with the dog, otherwise you could be in trouble.”
One job he’s not considering is his old one: Designated Hitter for the Red Sox, admitting he doesn’t believe he could still play. “I don’t think I’ve got any hits left,” he laughs. The folks at Fusion hope differently.
Big Papi Needs a Job premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. Watch an exclusive clip from the premiere above.
