The Handmaid's Tale casts Cherry Jones in key role for season 2
June’s mother is found!
Actress Cherry Jones has been cast to play the mother of Elisabeth Moss’ character in season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale, EW can confirm.
The Tony winner will first appear as Holly in episode 3 of the show’s sophomore season. Holly is described by Hulu as “an outspoken feminist and a judgmental but loving mother to June.” There’s no word yet if she’ll be seen in flashbacks or the show’s terrifying dystopian present-day.
“She’s a terrific literary character who’s now going to come to life for the first time and so it was important to me who that was,” Moss told THR, which first broke the casting news. “I was obsessed with it for weeks and bothering everybody about it — way before anybody cared to talk about it. Cherry was my fantasy choice. I sent her the script, she wrote me a lovely email back and she said yes almost immediately.”
The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning drama, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, returns April 25 on Hulu.
