Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy heading to TV

The two companies won the bidding war for the rights to adapt Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam book trilogy for television, EW can confirm. If the show gets made, it will be the latest adaptation of Atwood’s work following the wild success of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which has taken home both the Emmy and Golden Globe for best television drama.

No network has been announced. Previously, Darren Aronofsky was developing an adaptation of the trilogy with eyes toward finding a home on HBO, but the project was shuttered in late 2016, according to Vulture.

Atwood’s trilogy, which includes Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013), is a post-apocalyptic tale of a small group of survivors looking to build a new world after a global pandemic wipes out the majority of the human race.

MaddAddam will be executive-produced by Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Bard Dorros along with Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment’s Angus Wall, Linda Carlson, and Kent Kubena. “I am very happy with the vision described to me by Angus, Kent, David, Bard, and Amy, as well as the stunning visual presentation they put together. I very much look forward to working with them,” said Margaret Atwood in a statement.

“Margaret Atwood’s unique and singular literary voice speaks to the greater issues facing our current climate and resonates with fans worldwide; the MaddAddam Trilogy is no exception,” said Amy Powell, president of Paramount TV. “These stories are perfectly suited for portrayal on television and we are thrilled to once again bring a literary masterpiece to life with our partners at Anonymous Content, Angus Wall, and Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment.”

MaddAddam marks the latest high-profile prestige drama for Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. They recently announced the limited series adaptation of Catch-22 headlined by George Clooney, as well as produced Netflix’s acclaimed 13 Reasons Why, TNT’s highly anticipated The Alienist, and more.
