FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story chronicles the titular designer’s murder, but it also focuses on serial killer Andrew Cunanan’s four other victims.
In this exclusive clip from the fifth episode, Jeff Trail (American Horror Story‘s Finn Wittrock) confronts former friend Andrew (Darren Criss) after he discovers Andrew has gone through his things, particularly his old Navy uniform. Cunanan will eventually beat Trail to death with a hammer.
The fifth hour also focuses on the military’s policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” through the eyes of Trail, a closeted gay man in the Navy. “I was interested in really showing the pain of what happened and the collateral damage and the collateral damage to every victim, every family member,” says executive producer Ryan Murphy. “All of those people were not able to deal with their sexuality in the ’90s and that ultimately lead to so much destruction and I thought that was powerful. American Crime Story only works if it’s telling a story but it’s about a modern issue. [The People v. O.J. Simpson] was able to look at race and misogyny and sexism. This was about homophobia and celebrity.”
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
