Devil's Bargain

Last we saw Jody Mills, she was trying to get in touch with Sam and Dean, realizing that something must be wrong, and opening her home to Patience. Because, as per usual, Jody is juggling a million things in order to help as many people as she possibly can. “I admire her immensely,” star Kim Rhodes says. “[She has] a maternal love for such a vast array of humanity. I’m excited [that I get] to play that belief that humanity has value and deserves to be saved.”

Jody Mills first arrived on the Supernatural scene in season 5’s “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” when she lost both her son and her husband. From then on, the sheriff has made at least one appearance each season, and now, she’ll take part in “Wayward Sisters,” the backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off featuring Claire, Jody, Alex, Donna, Patience, and Kaia. Together, the women’s first test will be saving Sam and Dean from The Bad Place, which means Jody needs all the help she can get. In other words, Claire is coming home. “Jody and Claire are in conflict over how they view the world and how they best think a monster should be killed,” Rhodes says. “That’s going to be a challenge for the characters within the spin-off: What’s our goal as a group and how do we accomplish it together?”

The conflicting ideals will sound familiar to Supernatural fans, who’ve watched Sam and Dean disagree for years, most recently when it came to how to handle Jack. But that’s not the only similarity between Wayward and the flagship series. “The monsters, the drama, the excitement, and the action is all consistent with Supernatural,” Rhodes says, adding, “But you understand why the boys aren’t handling it.”

Generally, when it comes to the potential spin-off, Rhodes knows they’re walking a fine line. “I, as a fan of Supernatural, would have a hard time, even if I were in it, supporting anything that would eclipse or take the place of Supernatural,” she says. “At the same time, being a fan of Supernatural, I want something that sings in harmony, that exists separately but is still vitally connected to Supernatural, and I think they have achieved that with this.”

The backdoor pilot for Wayward Sisters airs Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
