Nathan Lane is heading to The Blacklist for the show’s milestone 100th episode — and EW has the exclusive first look.
The landmark episode pits Raymond Reddington (James Spader) against a worthy foe in the blacklister of the hour, the cunning Abraham Stern (Lane), both of whom seek a legendary treasure that Stern believes is his birthright.
“Nathan comes in and plays a character who is a sort of unexpected criminal,” executive producer Jon Bokenkamp says. “He’s got some baggage that he’s trying to overcome that makes him peculiar and strange and dangerous in his own way. He’s fantastic. It’s going to be a really fun episode.”
But Stern mainly serves as an echo of the show’s core father-daughter dynamic. “We chose to do a story that has some analogy to that in the story between Nathan Lane’s character and his father, who has a history much like Reddington’s; he was criminal like Reddington,” EP John Eisendrath adds. “So, Nathan Lane in that is the child like Liz, trying to wrestle with what it means to have a parent who was a criminal.”
The Blacklist‘s 100th episode airs Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
James Spader is Raymond "Red" Reddington, a mastermind criminal who teams up with the FBI.
