Following his big fight with Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) in the midseason finale, the titular doc abandons his job and hits the road with his delightful neighbor Lea (Paige Spara) for soul-searching — and then some.
“He has a bit of an adventure as he starts to figure out where his place in the world is for a moment,” executive producer David Shore says about the two-part winter premiere. “Road trips are usually metaphors for personal journeys, and this is no different.”
Among other things, Shaun and Lee’s flirtatious relationship takes a turn. Teases Shore, “We’re going to see some more firsts for Shaun.”
Back at the hospital, Glassman will be busy covering for and worrying about Shaun while Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) and Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) team up on a thematically relevant medical case involving conjoined twins. “There’s also the theme of separation — a theme of who we are and how connected we are that works nicely with our other stories,” says Shore. “Are we islands? How much do we need people? How much does Shaun need Lea? How much Shaun need Glassman? Of course in the medical story, how much do these two girls need each other?”
The Good Doctor returns tonight at 10:01 p.m. ET on ABC.
