If you’re a fan of Steven Soderbergh (Logan Lucky, The Knick), interactive storytelling, and murder mysteries, then this might be your next big TV obsession. HBO released a brand-new MOSAIC trailer, which previews the filmmaker’s mysterious new project that’s been three years in the making.
For a while, we didn’t know much about MOSAIC other than it was a new app experience that brings a choose-your-own-adventure-style flair to Soderbergh’s new story.
Sharon Stone — known for roles in Basic Instinct, Casino, and Total Recall — plays Olivia Lake, a notable children’s author and illustrator whose career makes her something of a celebrity in her mountain resort town. On New Year’s Day, she vanishes, leaving behind a blood-stained studio for detective Nate Henry (Devin Ratray) to investigate.
MOSAIC transforms into a whodunit mystery. There are faces like JC (Paul Reubens), Olivia’s trusted friend; Joel Hurley (Garrett Hedlund), a newcomer in town who ends up living and working at Olivia’s place; Laura (Maya Kazan), Joel’s girlfriend who stokes Olivia’s jealously upon arrival; Eric Neill (Frederick Weller), a charming stranger who’s determined to woo Olivia; and Petra (Jennifer Ferrin), Eric’s sister who helps try to solve the mystery.
What is sure to intrigue viewers is that there is more than one way to watch the series unfold. You can either tune in on Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on HBO to watch the premiere episode. Subsequent installments will continue to air in the same time slot on Jan. 23, 24, and 25, with the final two airing on Friday, Jan. 26.
The other option is through the MOSAIC app. According to its description, it “allows viewers to choose what point-of-view from which to follow the story and to, in effect, build their own experience from the material Soderbergh and [Ed] Solomon created. The choices one makes build upon one another, enabling multiple tellings of the story from different perspectives and, sometimes, with different conclusions.”
Soderbergh directed all six episodes, which were written by Solomon. Check out the new poster and episode descriptions below.
