Saturday Night Live - Season 42

The third time was not the charm for Kevin Hart as he opened the last episode of Saturday Night Live before the show’s winter break with monologue that was blasted as “not good,” “sexist,” and “awful” on social media.

Making his third SNL hosting appearance, the veteran comedian drew on his experience as a new father — he just welcomed child No. 3 — to joke about the responsibility of raising kids, but a riff on gender roles fell flat.

“You have to take your hat off, when it comes to dealing with kids, to the women,” Hart said.” Women, I give you so much credit. Like, you guys do so much. I take my hat off to you. … But the one thing that you’re not, the one thing that you’re not, is fun.” He also said men have “the hardest job” when it comes to raising children — being fun — and the internet reacted accordingly.

Some viewers pointed out that Hart’s monologue felt tone-deaf given recent movements to address gender inequality in the entertainment industry and beyond.

“2017 has seen incredible progress for women,” on Twitter user wrote. “Kevin Hart’s opening monologue belongs in 2016. Disappointed in @nbcsnl for a #sexist opening monologue #snl.”

TV critic Daniel Fienberg invoked the the cheating scandal Hart was involved in earlier this year, tweeting, “Given recent problematic specifics of Kevin Hart’s personal life, this would not have been the monologue direction I’d have taken. #SNL.”
